devilwood
Osmanthus armatus
Overview
Devilwood (Osmanthus armatus) is an evergreen shrub native to China and Japan. It has glossy, dark green leaves with spiny margins and produces small, white flowers with a pleasing fragrance in autumn. The flowers are followed by oval-shaped berries that ripen to purple-blue with a white coating. This shrub can reach up to 6 meters in height and 5 meters in width, making it an excellent choice for hedging or screening. It's also tolerant of drought, full sun, and pruning, making it easy to maintain in the garden. Its common name, devilwood, originates from its hard, dense wood and spiny foliage.
