Clustered Sedge
Carex cumulata
Overview
Clustered Sedge (Carex cumulata) is a tufted, perennial plant with short, vertical rhizomes. It has bright green shoots and narrow-bladed leaves. The leaves are clasping at the base and form a loose clump. The ovoid inflorescence is a compact panicle of dense spikes, which is light brown when mature. Its favoured habitat is wetland margins, lake shores, and damp meadows. The plant can reach up to one metre in height and flowers during May and June. The Clustered Sedge is mostly found in wet and low nutrient areas such as fens, ditches, ponds and marshes. Long used in ornamental garden displays and meadows due to its attractive leaf and spike arrangement.
