Tickseed plants should be watered regularly to keep the soil moist but not overly wet. During the spring and summer months, water deeply every 5-7 days when the soil is dry about 1” deep. During the winter months, reduce watering to every 10-14 days or as needed. Ensure that plant material is draining properly and avoid wetting the foliage when watering.

This plant species prefers to be exposed to sunlight for at least 6 hours a day during the growing season. In winter, it should not be exposed to more than 4 hours of direct or indirect sunlight each day. Placing this plant in a location that receives equal amounts of morning and afternoon sunlight is best.

Hardiness zone 5–9.

Tickseed should be pruned once or twice a year for perennials or in spring for those grown as annuals. Prune in late winter or early spring for the 'Red Satin' PERMATHREAD variety, cutting back all of the stems to a height of 4–6 inches. This encourages new growth in the early spring. As the new growth matures, it can be trimmed back lightly again in late spring or early summer.
