Pruning times should be kept to a minimum to prevent stress on the plant and to maintain its desirable shape and size. When pruning, remove dead or wilted flower heads to make room for new blooms. Cut back the stems of the yarrow to just above the leaf nodes so that you don't create an unsightly bald spot in the flower bed. If you prune too far back, you'll create excessive branching.
