Sweet pepperbush requires moist soil during the growing season. It should be watered about once a week. Deep water whenever a prolonged period without rain occurs; however, make sure to check the soil beforehand so that it is moist but not saturated. Avoid watering in the late afternoon or at night to minimize fungal growth. Sweet pepperbush does not require frequent fertilizer and will benefit from a single application of an all-purpose fertilizer in the spring.

Clethra alnifolias 'Tom's Compact' plants thrive when they receive full sun or partial shade. For best results, aim for at least 6 hours of sunlight during the summer months. In the early morning and late afternoon, the sun's rays are not as hot or intense, making this the ideal time for the species to receive its daily dose of light. During the long days of summer, provide 6 to 8 hours of filtered sunlight or place the plant in a spot that receives all-day partial shade. If the plant is in a full sun location, increases its water needs.

Sweet pepperbush (Clethra alnifolia 'Tom's Compact') should be lightly pruned in early spring before new growth appears. All faded flowers should be removed. During the second year of growth, selective pruning should be done to maintain a compact form and shape. Prune any weak, wayward, or overly long branches or stems. In subsequent years, sweet pepperbush may need to be thinned out to allow light to penetrate. Remember to use sharp, sterilized pruning shears to avoid causing damage to the shrub.
