The first pruning should occur in late winter or early spring, when new growth begins, by removing about a third of the previous year's growth. This encourages lateral growth and denser foliage. The second pruning should occur in early summer, after the flowers have finished blooming. Remove any dead or diseased stems, and prune back any long or unruly shoots. Pruning trumpet creeper too severely or too often may reduce flowering and/or inhibit the plant's growth, so it's important to be judicious in how much is removed.
