Care Guide
Watering
For coneflowers, it is important to water them deeply but infrequently to prevent rot and encourage strong roots. Water every 2-3 weeks in the growth season, in early spring when the soil is still moist, and then once or twice a month in the summer. Make sure the soil is moist but not drenched. Allow the soil to dry out between each watering. During the winter months, reduce watering to once every 6-8 weeks, depending on weather conditions.
Light
Coneflower (Echinacea 'Sombrero Hot Pink') should be grown in full sun for best flowering. This means it should receive at least 6 hours of direct sun per day. If possible, try to give the plant up to 8-10 hours of sunlight per day for greatest flowering potential. It may be able to tolerate some partial shade, but it will likely produce fewer flowers if not grown in full sun.
Temperature
Hardiness zone 3–8.
Pruning
In general, Coneflower should be lightly pruned after flowering to help promote new growth and increase flower production the following season. If the plant becomes too large or unmanageable, a more drastic pruning can be done. This should take place in late fall or winter. When pruning flowering shrubs, remember to cut back just above a set of nodes (where 2 branches meet). Start by removing dead and damaged branches. Then, reduce the remaining branches by 1-third. This will encourage new growth and a fuller shrub. Cutting back just above the nodes will also help keep the shrub looking well-shaped and compact.
